World War II
Scientific advancements played a crucial role in the battles of World War II. The most effective weapons and strategies were critical during this time, as it would've been during any war. This was the time of new and improved technologies that would forever alter the course of scientific advancements.
Many of the advancements during World War II were created because of the dedication to the improvement of war technology. The point of most wars is to gain, not to lose, and by doing that, countries had to learn how to outsmart their enemy. To do that, from previous wars and studies, scientists and engineers were able to create and improve technologies that would benefit their chances of winning the war. Some of the science and machinery used in World War II was also used in previous wars, Like World War I, but they weren't very effective until later improved during the 1920's to 1930's.
A major invention of WWII was sonar (sound navigation and ranging) and radar (radio detecting and ranging). Sonar didn't have as big of a name as radar did but both were high-tech and revolutionary. The 1940's radar was used by sending out a radio wave and analyzing the reflected wave after it bounced off any objects within the area. Radar would use radio waves to detect the movement of objects from very far away, farther than the eye could see. That was why radar was such an advantage, it was basically a way to locate where the enemy was and when they would attack, therefore they would be prepared to fight or flee. This new tool wasn't fully developed until a few years after World War II had begun and this is part of the reason why we have satellite today.
World War II also became a result of new medical technology. Penicillin is a synthetic antibiotic, discovered sometime before World War II but became mass produced during World War II. The point of the mass production was mostly to treat the venereal diseases gonorrhea and syphilis, which had been the scourge of armies for thousands of years. This new medicine was helpful to World War II militaries because it saved soldiers from disease, sparing more men on their side to fight. It is still used today and for the most part, if it wasn't for penicillin, we might not have had the antibiotics for treating small infections from becoming life threatening illnesses.
There were was the period in World War II of unprecedented technological progress that saw the invention of new, powerful weapons by both sides of the war. A noteworthy section from those inventions were some of the bombs and rockets created during those times. Some of these weapons were highly ingenious, like the bouncing bomb, used against Germany, while some had went on to change the shape of warfare today, like rockets, missiles and the atom bomb. During the war, Germany had formed a 'rocket team' (team of rocket scientists), in which had invented two rockets known as the V-1 (cruise missile) and the V-2 (ballistic missile). These were both dropped on London in 1944 to 1945, killing thousands of civilians.
World War II was surely one of the largest armed conflicts in history, spanning the entire world which cultivated some of the most revolutionary weaponry known of and used today. These weapons were created and modernized to overpower each opposing side of World War II.
